100 years of Bulgarian beauty

So this year Internet have been providing us with lots of 100 years of beauty videos. There are a big variation of this videos, there are men and women, wedding dresses, and almost every nation has their own 100 years of beauty video- so also Bulgaria.

What is the purpose of this video?

The video doesn’t aim to be neither a historical or fashion statement, but rather recreate a beauty over time.

Who is behind this project?

The video is created by the company of 7Talents and lead by the director Boryana Gidikova.

What is the inspiration for this video?

The inspiration to the fashion comes from famous Bulgarian movies (such as Time, The Peach Thief, Goat Horn, Orchestra without a name and Every kilometer) and also two famous singers Milena Slavova and Sasha Vaseva.

What makes the video interesting?

To me this video is very interesting in a historical perspective. We know that fashion changes, sometimes because of climate or society changes, sometimes cause of fashion makers. Fashion in the Western world is today related to status and to show your identity, and there is a lot to say about that but I will not go deeper into that now.

In this video we get to follow Bulgarian women clothes and the changing of it. It starts in the 17oo century were we get to see the woman dressed  in typical farmer clothes, which explains the world of Bulgaria around that time. Majority of the people were farmers around the 1700 century.

During the 1800 century we can see a big change where the clothes got much more details and colors. You will find this kind of clothes in many places today since its very popular when it comes to folklore events which are very popular in Bulgaria.

When we reach the clothes of 1915 we can see that something have now changed completely when it comes to the clothes. Around 1877-78 Bulgaria stroked back against the Ottoman empire with some help from Russia. And in 1908 Bulgaria claimed their independence. We can now see on the clothes that the Bulgarian woman had here was the same as the fashion in the rest of the western world.

In 1944 we can once again see a clear change in her clothes. 1944 was the year when Bulgaria turned in to a socialist country. What we see her is a socialist woman that both worked and fought among the side with the men. Still women clothes but with a different agenda, a political one.

1956 woman meets us, still socialism, but here we meet the working woman.

From 1965 and forward in the rest of the video we can see the same fashion as in the rest of the western world. One last thing that makes a special place for the Bulgarian clothing is in 1995 when we meet the fashion of Chalga. Chalga is a popular music in Bulgaria (well, every one have their own opinion about this genre), the music is inspired by folk music and modern dance with influences from Serbian, Turkish, Greek, Arabic and Russian music. Female singers of chalga is today famous for being bold and challenging.

We can see how the politic and the spirit of every each decade has put its touch in the clothes we are wearing.
