Bulgarian Film Music

If you not are a Bulgarian, or very familiar with the Bulgarian culture, the Bulgarian music can be a bit of a mystery. But in fact you have probably heard more Bulgarian music then you expect, Bulgarian music can be heard in several movies. Here are some examples!


The action movie Redemption (Hummingbird) from 2013 with the famous actor  Jason Statham contains  the Bulgarian folklore song Malka moma (Little girl). The song got very popular and after the releasing on You Tube it has been viewed over 1 million times in one year all over the world, and it also became the most listened song to in Bulgaria that year.

Xena the Warrior Princess 

Xena the warrior princess was a serial from 1995-2001 filmed in New Zealand based on fantasy on mythology. The theme song to Xena is performed by the Mystere Des Voix Bulgares (The Bulgarian´s Women Choir). And here is the lyrics in Bulgarian but also with a translation:

Jenata iazdi samotna– A woman is riding alone
Neinoto minalo srazi ia– Her shameful past almost destroyed her
Sreshtu voiskite ot tumen sviat– She is batteling the army of the dark world
Voiuva za dobro tia– She is fighting in the name of good

Rogovi zvunove idavt– Horns are sounding as she approaches
Napraite put na voina!– Way must be made for a fierce battle
Tupani biat vuv ritum– Rhythmical drums are heard
Princhesata e pak tuka!– The Princess is back

Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra 

Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra have been accompanied music to movies like Une vie de chat (A cat in Paris) (2010), Beautiful wave (2011), The Fall (2006), The Italian husband (2004) and many more. Here is an example from the movie Gainsbourg (Vie Héroïque) (2010) about the French singer Serge Gainsbourg.



From the movie 300 from 2007 can you hear the song Zaidi, Zaidi Iasno Slantze. This song is however contested since many people say its a Bulgarian song, and equal many people argues that it is a Macedonian song written by Aleksandar Sarievski.
